Vintage and tweed styled inspiration shoot - with a little shot of velvet

I often have the opportunity to work with some really fun public events around Portland. This year I've been involved with the Portland Tweed Ride organizers' group and had the opportunity to help them produce some promotional media for their event, starting with a Save the Date card. It seemed like a great way to do some vintage and tweed inspiration for a possible wedding style board. With the way velvet is trending for 2018, I thought it would fun to throw a bit of that in too.

 

We were able to secure the wonderful Evrim Icoz Wedding Photography to shoot the photos, and Event Cosmetics to handle the hair and makeup. Nea Posey, one of Katherine Sealy's Event Cosmetics clients, and Jeanie Whitten-Andrews, who had worked with Evrim before, stepped up as models. Event Cosmetics also secured the indoor venue, Oregon Historical Society, for us. Luckily, I owned a great deal of the props and attire in my personal collection, so it wasn't hard to put together the shoot!

 

A quick stop by Elephants Deli for some bread, Champagne (actually it was Cremant de Bourgogne -- a more affordable alternative to having Champagne from the actual region of Champagne) and glassware; and also Gifford's Flowers for some blooms to adorn the vintage bikes, and we were all set. I hope you enjoy the photos and our vision! And of course, I hope you'll join us on the ride on April 8th, 2018. Or just use these photos as an inspiration stepping stone to your own engagement, elopement, or wedding style.

{ Photo of the Day } Light and Shadow at Zenith Vineyard

It's a bright fall November day in Portland, so I thought I would post something with a harvest vibe. Today's photo comes from David Barss, taken at Zenith Vineyard in 2012. Jeanne and Korash were married towards the end of the summer and I just love the interplay between light and shadow that makes for an atypical couples' photo.

Today's photo comes is from the 2007 archives! Altura Studio captured this beautiful outdoor reception at the Portland Art Museum sculpture garden. I loved how the platinum lamour table linens contrasted with the bright colors of the fall flowers and the existing art. Very excited to read that the PAM will be adding a fantastic new art pavilion in this location in the next couple of years, but it's a little bittersweet to say farewell to this unique outdoor urban wedding location. Catering: Vibrant Table, Flowers, Geranium Lake.

 

( Photo of the Day ) - The Nines Hotel, Textural Geometric Centerpiece

Today's photo that I'm loving comes from Evrim Icoz Photography - we recently did a wedding at The Nines Hotel where the client asked for modern, geometric centerpieces to go with the modern, glamorous look of the hotel and the reception. These were designed by Geranium Lake and I just love the mix of textural floral with the sharp lines of the container. Thank you to everyone who worked on this wedding with us!

Cool Photobooth Additions and Alternatives {What can I have instead of a photobooth?}

The wedding photobooth used to be a fun novelty; now it seems like a wedding must-have, along with regular photography and mini-desserts. So common now, that we're often asked,

"What can I add to my wedding to entertain guests along with, or instead of, a photobooth?"

We are definitely still big fans of the photobooth because not only is it amusing, it serves as a different kind of wedding documentation and also as a party favor. But here are a few ideas if you want to supplement the wedding day with entertainment or amusements that are a little different and sure to be remembered:

GIFbooth: Do you love GIFs on tumblr? Or the fancy cinemagraphs that get passed around every Fashion Week? Animated GIFs (Graphics Interchange Files) are made using a special videocamera setup that translates the captured video or still frames into a moving photo. These can be downloaded from a wedding website after the wedding, and make a fun momento, similar to a flipbook. Among others, GIFFF Booth and Limelight Photo can provide these services.

{ From the Archives } Mindy and Ashish's Garba and Indian Wedding at Bridal Veil Lakes, Oregon

This time of year, we're fielding tons of inquiries, cleaning up the blog, receiving happy emails from brides with links to their summer wedding photos. I was just going through some photo files and couldn't believe I'd overlooked blogging Mindy and Ashish's garba (Gujarati-style dance party) and wedding weekend from a few years ago.

The garba was held at the downtown Hilton Portland and catered by East India Company. I worked with Royce's Prop Shop and the bride, who had brought back a ton of gorgeous sari fabric that she wanted to use around the room. Royce and I came up with the idea of draping the saris over T-bar posts, and using uplighting for a festive effect:

With so many national resources and wedding directories out there, it's sometimes hard to find a directly, truly local resource for information on Portland wedding photography. Thankfully you only need one - and we have a great one in My Portland Photographer. Run entirely by a savvy group of local Portland wedding photographers, the site serves up almost daily wedding inspiration, photography advice, and just good old fashioned wedding eye candy. You can even check availability and book your photographer straight from the site. The best part is that I have personally worked with many of the photogs on this site, so I know you'll find someone you'll love!

 

 

The hottest day of the year...

I know, you probably think I'm crazy for talking about summer weddings. I can't help it! This time of year when our fingers and toes are freezing just from walking to the mailbox and back, it's almost impossible to remember what the kiss of the sun is like. Thank goodness for photographs. This beauty sent to me by Evrim Icoz shows a wedding we coordinated last year for Heather and Joe.

And what a day it was! Evrim goes in to more detail on his blog (and you can see all the great pictures there), but in a nutshell:

11:am Wedding ceremony in the urban forest

12:00 Brunch in the park

1:00 Pedicab and trolley rides around Portland

2:45 Jet boat rides on the river

4:00 Change clothes for the reception

6:00 Super glam/boho reception at Castaway with Simpatica Catering; and dancing 'til socks were worn through.

A few tips for your own summer outdoor wedding in Portland and how you can be ready:

- Make sure cold beverages are plentiful upon arrival. For an informal wedding, tubs or deep trays filled with ice can surround bottled drinks or heavy glasses.

- Have a plan for shade. Too often, brides and grooms only plan for a rain back up. But a sun plan should also be in effect. Parasols, extra tents, mist fans, and table umbrellas can all help.

- If you have an indoor venue, check out the A/C options and rent fans or swamp coolers if the venue doesn't have any.

Lovely wedding photos at McMenamins Edgefield by Fritz Photo

A while back, Shutterbug Magazine featured a photographer we've been working with for a very long time: Fritz Liedtke of Fritz Photo. We were super happy for him, and additionally thrilled that the magazine chose a photo from one of our own clients, whose wedding was held at McMenamins Edgefield.
